That big screen TV you're eyeing for Super Bowl watching could end up being one of the worst energy hogs in your house, but it's now easier to find the more efficient models. Televisions that meet new ENERGY STARŪ ratings are up to 30 percent more efficient than conventional sets of the same size.
Earlier ENERGY STARŪ ratings for televisions were only based on use of standby power, the power consumed when appliances are turned off. ENERGY STARŪ-labeled sets that went on the shelves November 1, 2008, meet new standards covering energy usage when they're both off and on.
The ENERGY STARŪ label tells you which models in the same class are relatively more efficient, but large screen televisions still use a lot of power.
There may still be some televisions for sale with ENERGY STARŪ ratings based on the pre-November standards. For more information, including a list of models that meet the new standards, go to www.energystar.gov/televisions.
